AI TO BRING ABOUT COMPLETE GATE AUTOMATION AT PORTS

We automated the gate operations of the port to reduce the waiting time.

Everyday large number of goods are transported across the globe. Over 80% of these goods are normally transported in containers that are eventually loaded onto trucks, trains or ships. Further, these containers are moved around several times through ports and terminals. With the continuous involvement of vehicles for transporting these goods, the tracking of container’s specific location and details of the goods on real-time basis becomes very difficult leading to increased costs. In addition, delays at terminal gates on account of manual paperwork and inspection tend to become bottlenecks. This results in traffic congestion and longer waiting cycles leading to increased costs and compromised security.

To overcome this problem, ports all over the world are adopting new technologies such as Computer Vision based AI, ML to elevate their efficiency and overall productivity. Using these advanced technologies and the existing infrastructure, ATAI has introduced ATGATE – a completely automated gate system for the processing of container trucks at terminal entry/exit gates serving as the boundary checkpoints in highly restricted, secure zones. ATGATE works in real time, making traffic flow efficient, streamlined and fully automated, introducing transparency, visibility and security into gate operations.

Our ATGATE systems scans the container and the truck that is in motion, using a set of sensors at the controlled access points. These sensors automatically capture the truck license number, container number, ISO code, seal intactness and count, hazard presence and classification, damage detection. This solution uses advanced camera sensors which can carry out the complete process without any manual intervention in less than 1 minute. These outputs are then utilized for real-time decision making and analytics. The entire process is conducted with >99% accuracy and eliminates the errors involved in the manual process.

At the gate, the captured details are used to determine if the container details are complete to make sure their hazard category is correctly determined to be then placed in their predetermined position in the yard. If the container is placed at an incorrect location in the yard, an alert notification is generated. The 11-digit alphanumeric container number and 4-digit alphanumeric ISO code is used to locate the container at any time, all throughout its journey from entry to exit from the port. Seal intactness of all containers is not only verified at the gate, but at every point in the port to make sure the goods in the container are safe and untouched.

ATGATE is advantageous for the following reasons:

  • Real-time data capturing

  • Optimization of logistic processes

  • Optimal use of human resources

  • Shortened handling and throughput times in terminals

  • Real-time accurate information capture

  • Real-time container visibility

  • Optimized planning and lower OPEX

  • Seamless integration with TOS

  • Process reliability and accuracy

Terminal Operating System (TOS) acts as the brain of operations. It stores data and also business logic so that many formerly manual decisions can be executed automatically. With the expansion of AI technology, AI is augmenting the terminal operating systems (TOS) for most port operations around the world. ATGATE is hence designed to integrate with the TOS and other terminal control systems to be able to retrieve information at any point in time and optimize the entire process.

One of the key elements of port and terminal operations is the ability to increase productivity. ATAI’s applications are increasingly used to improve operational visibility and automate various processes in the port. In the container terminal, we not only automate at the gate but also provide solutions for all inbound/outbound points i.e rake side and dock side as well.

All in all, ATAI focuses on providing solutions for the entire container terminal to contribute to the safety of the workers by automating manual process to reduce the risk of accidents and placing the works in safer areas. This also diminishes the possibility of being in close contact to any hazardous containers at the port. ATAI’s solutions also largely focus on the security of assets and cargo, ensuring supply chain security and detection of any form of cargo tampering and pilferage. With the world swiftly adapting ports 4.0, ATAI is working towards the complete digitization of ports.
